Return of the Swallows

Hundreds gathered at Mission San Juan Capistrano for the Return of the Swallows festival -- an event celebrating the famous swallows flight back to Orange County.

"I think it's a chance to be renewed and reconnected with orange county's only mission," said Mechelle Lawrence-Adams, Executive Director of Mission San Juan Capistrano.

No birds today, but hundreds of people came to the mission to capture the memories of this historic landmark. Among them were fourth graders from Brywood Elementary in Irvine.

"I like it. Every time I visit it's very fun," student Maggie Yan said.

Fourth graders learn in school about Father Serra's spiritual journey to build these missions across the land we now call, California. Today they saw it for themselves.

"It's pretty cool. I like it because it's really big, you can see all the things there," Brywood Elementary student Isha Trivedi said.

About 10,000 people are expected to visit the city this weekend to experience old Western heritage and teach future generations.

"I'm taking care of the grandkids and I took him for a little outing today. He says he likes it," Lucy Snobl said.

It's a world renowned festival, but one rich in local tradition, all to make sure the future and remembers the past.
